Anaphora

Filippo Deorsola (piano, prepared piano)

Jonathan Ho Chin Kiat (double bass) Marco Luparia (drums, objects)

Switching and Mixing “different genres and rhythms in an incredibly controlled and enjoyable way” [Best of Jazz, USA], Anaphora is an athletic criss-cross between jazz and non-european rhythmical traditions from Indonesian Gamelan to Indian Konnakol.

[Bloom], their latest album for Loumi Records, is a collective exploration of the power of dreaming out sounds and sounding out dreams. And what an [oneiric] adventure it is. Filippo Deorsola (piano) , Marco Luparia (drums) , Jonathan Ho (d.bass)  are the foam of a single wave and the air of a common lung, often giving out the curious feeling of “a one-body community, an interbreathing of rational inputs and intuitive letting go’s.” [Bo van der Werf, Liner notes]. The result is an album full of highly original compositions. A fascinating interplay of cyclical patterns, danceable grooves, gongs, techno-like beats, and other colorful sonic creatures. Flowing seamlessly between opulence and minimalism, rawness and elegance, [Bloom] is a ritual of motion, a kaleidoscopic rhythm-machine where sound, musicians and audience forms the threads of a shared, common dream.

The music regenerates itself by active rotations and reflections of ideas and actions, previously heard segments decrease or increase, sonic echoes that travel as if in dreams of past and future Blooms.
Fresh and airy, the trio’s conceptual approach is entirely poetic and plays like an athletic, yet joyful discipline in sound. Transparency and opacity in suspended motion, the three nomads are on the same flow, one of ever-changing interconnectedness. An affective practice of flying as if bee, diffusing as if vapor, contracting as if muscle or distending as if avalanche.
Repeated listening is recommended.
